TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The basis of my classes is rooted in breath, focus, and awareness. Using a variety of technical and improvisational exercises, the students are asked to become more aware of their breath and their bodies, as well as the other bodies in the space. Students will also be asked to think critically and spontaneously to devise new movement and to transform known movement into something novel. Simple and complex technical sequences will train students’ ability to learn choreography while also teaching confidence, performance, and honesty within their own movement style.

Much of my teaching philosophy is also based in knowing your own body and limitations, and respecting those limits within yourself and others. Learning to work with your body, instead of against it, and adapting movements to suit what feels best for each individual. No two dancers are alike, and my approach to teaching takes this into account. Working in large or small groups, I always aim to give personal attention to each student and ensure that everyone feels involved in the class. The lesson unfolds in a fluid way, where exercises and sequences can be adapted to each group of students and can be altered along with the needs of the class.

COURSE OPTIONS OFFERED

  1. Single class – A one-off lesson to provide an overview of my teaching style and philosophies, giving the students a broad look at various contemporary and improvisational exercises.

  2. Course series – Several classes designed as a sequence (either many days over one week, or a number of lessons across several weeks). A series designed to deepen students’ understanding of breath and awareness, and to allow them to immerse themselves within various contemporary and improvisational exercises.

  3. Choreography or Composition – The creation of choreography for the students (either my own choreography, or through a guided compositional process including the students’ ideas and movements).

*Every class or series can be individually designed to fit the requirements of the school/studio.
